| History Behind the Charm |

|Greenville, formerly known as the “Textile Capital of the World”, has a rich history spanning 16 textile mills, 2 bleachers, as well as trade shows with attendees from across the globe. Greenville hosted the Southern Trade Exposition in rented warehouses in 1915 but the event was such a success for the town that a permanent space was built. (Old) Textile Hall, built in 1917 specifically for the Southern Trade Exposition, stood on W. Washington St. neighboring St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The building was later demolished in 1992 but the Exposition continued in Greenville until 2004.

Fitting that the Textile Capital of the World forms a Textile Crescent. Forming a semi circle/ crescent on a map of the city, these 8 Textile Mills and their respective “Mill Villages” are reminders of the steady employment and community formed through Greenville’s growth. The mills and bleachery forming the Textile Crescent include Union Bleachery, Poe Mill, Monaghan Mill, Woodside Mill, Brandon Mill, Westervelt/Judson Mill, Dudean Mill and Mills Mill. |
