| History Behind the Charm |

 | Replacing the First Greenville County Courthouse constructed from log in 1797, the new and updated Second Greenville County Courthouse would thrive for the next 100 years. Designed by architect Robert Mills, notable for working on the Washington Monument, The Fireproof Building in Charleston, SC, University of South Carolina, and more. Mills drew inspiration in columns from the Parthenon in Greece and his passion shows in his works.

Built in Court’s Square on S. Main St in 1823 from locally sourced materials quarried off Augusta Rd The Second Greenville County Courthouse was built.  For nearly 60 years the building stood tall and proud but vandalism slowly crept in and there was talk to demolish it. In the 1880s, the county attempted to save the courthouse by updating it with a clock cupola, a fresh coat of paint, and any window repair needed. Their attempt to save the building was successful, but not for long. The building becoming a “dilapidated old shell” around 1900 led to the county proposing it become a library but ultimately became the Chamber of Commerce until it was demolished in 1924.

-William B. Coxe Collection, Greenville County Historical Society, circa 1905-

Today, a Historical Marker sits in Court’s Square just a short walk from where the building once stood. If you would like to see this building, however, there is a replica in the Upcountry History Museum in Downtown Greenville. |
